Top Tips for Terrific InkJet Print

Ms. Pat McGrew, M-EDP, CMP – InkJet Evangelist  / PageWide Web Press / HP

Inkjet printing is a powerful force. It gives you amazing speed, beautiful print quality, and a variety of finishing options that let you meet the most demanding client requirements. Inkjet is, however, different from other printing technologies. A bit of planning and a bit of client education can go a long way toward ensuring that every print job runs smoothly. Here is our top ten list of things that should be on your “Job Onboarding Checklist” as you expand your business!

1. Understand the history of the job. Was it built for inkjet or is the file coming with a history of printing on offset or toner devices?

Why do you care? Jobs built for other devices may have been tuned for those devices. Decisions taken when preparing the images or setting ICC profiles attached to specific images or graphic elements could impact your ability to get the best print quality. So take a look and ask some questions. If there are specific ICC profiles attached to images and elements, test print to see if they are the best for your printing environment.

2. Review the resolution of each image and graphic in the print job.

Why do you care? Designers are wonderful people with a great eye for design. They often reuse elements they like, especially when they are preparing a multi-channel campaign. Occasionally they pull an image into the print file without realizing that it’s a 72dpi or 96dpi image that is not suitable for printing at the best quality. A quick trip through a preflight package can save time by identifying any images that are less than the 300dpi we like to see.

3. Review the color spaces for each image and graphic in the print job.

Why do you care? Color spaces can often be resolved in the digital front end. Many people print jobs successfully that have images using both CYMK and RGB color spaces. But a best practice is to get everything into a single color space if possible. Which one? To be honest, either can work well. The press is a CYMK press, so I tend to start there, but for jobs that have an RGB history, sRGB images work quite well.

4.  Look at the subject matter of the images. What are the levels of light and dark in the images?

In this image the contrast of the white paper and the rewind mechanics plus the shadows under the roll of print makes this a difficult image to print well. Take the time to go into photoshop and brighten the areas that need detail or consider cropping away the deep shadows. Our goal is always to get our colors to look rich and vibrant. We do that best by putting as little inko n the page as we can. When we encounter images like this on we walk a very fine line between getting the best black we can and getting vibrant colors. That’s why the prepress work pays off.

5. Review your file preparation settings to avoid over-inking.

Why do you care? Don’t tell my boss, but sometimes less ink is better. When files come in that were prepared for offset or other technologies they sometimes come in with ink settings that call for 150% or 200% ink levels. That worked for those technologies because they needed that level of saturation to get their best colors. Here in the world of the HP InkJet Web Press we get the best crispness and color when we match ink profiles to the specific paper and then adjust if needed. In many cases starting with an ink profile at 95% gives you a great start, and then you can dial up or down as needed before you lock in your production profile for the job.

This is just a starting point. Take a look at every facet of your print requirements and be brave. Test variations. Create new profiles. The results will be the best print you can get!

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with us?

It is important that marketing professionals understand the latest technology available to enable higher ROI and more effective communications. Inkjet is a rapidly evolving technology that is changing the face of printed communications. Business Review Webinars is an ideal medium to reach key decision makers and those interested in furthering their education.

2. How did you get into the industry?

I first became involved in graphic arts communications in my undergrad university days. I quickly developed a passion for helping people communicate to their audiences more effectively and efficiently. Over time, the technologies have evolved and today the communications landscape is transforming faster than ever. With markets and media choices changing so fast, I think today is the most exciting time to be a marketing professional.

3. What has been the best moment in your career?

I am currently experiencing the best time of my career. I am actively and continuously engaging with thought leaders in both technology and in communications. With that engagement, I am learning more than ever while at the same time I am able to share new innovations in print technology with the market. The future of digital print is brighter than ever.

4. Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

My most favorite place in the world is when I am sitting next to customers and marketing professionals talking about new ideas and case study successes. On March 25, that place will be this webinar.

5. What’s the most useful thing someone has ever taught you?

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” I think of this quote frequently when I work with people who believe in what they are doing and know that they are making a difference. Our customers do this and HP technologists do this every day when we create new ways of communicating. Inkjet innovation is an example of how HP is leading the way enthusiastically toward the future.

David will be presenting HP’s webinar ‘Brand Webinar: HP High Speed Inkjet – A new opportunity for Printed Communications?‘ on the 25th March at 11am New York/3pm London. You can read more and register here.

Spotlight Interview: Christian Menegon, Business Development Manager, HP

Christian MenegonAs electronic engineer, Christian started his career in the field by servicing pen plotters. He then moved to application support for cad cam systems with Scitex for 10 years which led him to production management in a repro house active in cartography and printed circuit boards.

At Drupa 1995, Indigo was launching the first digital press for industrial applications. Christian joined there as product manager bringing his market knowledge into the development of these revolutionary new products and solutions. Sales support and marketing were to be created, followed by sales management which he contributed to set up.

From his experience which started at the very beginning of this adventure, Christian became a central platform of knowledge and communication for the industrial products.

When HP acquired Indigo, while still sharing this accumulated information across regions, Christian extended his activities towards brand owners education. He now acts as business development manager promoting what digital printing can offer the brand owners in terms of benefits, associated or not, with other HP solutions.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

We are today in a work rhythm that is not always allowing us to do the face to face meetings as we would like to. Taking 45 minutes out of our office and daily work is quite tough. And we all recognise the value of the face to face meetings. This is true for us, and true for all business managers who need to access some information.  A webinar is an easy, convenient, and efficient way to stay in the office, and dedicate only the time needed to a chosen type of information. Specifically for the type of information we, HP Indigo, need to pass out, the business review webinars are a great platform connecting in a professional way quality audience with needs, and advisors who have some thoughts on the possible solutions.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

I need to show them what can be their interest in choosing to demand for digital printing packages or labels. Just by the words “Digital printing” one may understand this is a printing technology and not go further. The reality is that even being a printing technology, the services it brings to a brand owner and a printer can be very significant, and clearly far above just printing. This needs to be explained by showing examples and illustrating possibilities.

3. What has been the best moment in your career?

Being an active part of this industry revolution. Since Guttenberg, the printing industry has only improved in technology via innovation addressing quality, stability, speed, …. Digital printing is not only disruptive but also connects printing with the rest of our life. To play a role in this change is really rewarding.

4. What would someone be surprised to know about you?

While I defend digital printing and its environment for almost 20 years, I also fight against an abuse of computers in our day to day lives!

5. And Finally…

Beach or Skiing? No beach, but under water, and skiing slightly out of the regular slopes.

Books or Films? Not the same effect on me: Book for a relaxing moment, film to be taken away from the normal life.

Mac or PC? PC because I can trick it and cheat it. Mac is too good!  🙂

Red or White wine? Why choose? Both of course!

Christian will be presenting HP’s webinar: Digitally Printed Packaging – “The Art of the Possible” on the 12th June at 3pm London. To learn more and register please click here.
