1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

We were looking for an effective way to reach new customers and Business Review Webinars seemed to offer the best solution. With restrictions on travel budgets and the relatively high cost of attending conferences and associated travel time, webinars are becoming a very attractive and cost-effective alternative with the potential to reach a much wider audience than conventional seminars.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

ProMetic has some very innovative products and technologies which are very relevant to modern-day bio manufacturing processes. However, not everyone is aware of what ProMetic has to offer. We wish to use the webinar to explain to the audience how we can help customers develop highly effective purification processes that provide increased yields, enhanced levels of product safety and reduced cost of goods. Central to this is our ability to develop robust and inexpensive affinity adsorbents (Mimetic® Ligand adsorbents) which can be directed to the capture and purification of almost any biomolecule, especially therapeutic proteins. They can also be used for the capture and removal of trace impurities, potential contaminants and pathogens.

3. What is the ideal outcome you would like from doing the webinar?

We would like our brand to be better recognised and to provide potential new customers with a greater understanding of our core capabilities. Of course, some actual sales leads would be good too!

4. What’s the best book you’ve ever read and would recommend?

That would have the be “Longitude” by Dava Sobel. The book tells the story of John Harrison, an engineer and clock maker who developed highly accurate time pieces as a solution to the problem of measuring longitude at sea which was a significant problem for navigators in the early eighteenth century. There are many parallels in this book with the challenges faced by modern day innovators such as resistance to new ideas and technologies, access to funding, dealing  with protectionist measures deployed by the establishment of the day and the need for focus and sheer hard graft to deliver a product which achieves the required level of performance. Ultimately this is a story of technological triumph in the face of years of adversity and the development of a product that changed the world.

5. What motivates you?

I like to succeed in what I do and develop solutions to problems. I love the challenge of taking a seemingly intractable problem and reducing it to a simple solution. If anyone wants to motivate me just tell me something I am working on cannot be done!

Spotlight Interview: Mahmud Jarrar, Director Technical Customer Service, Steam Tubes & Pipes, Vallourec

Mahmud JarrarMahmud has nearly 15 years in the group. He joined Vallourec in the Mülheim Conti Mill as a Quality engineer after graduating as a Engineer of material science . He later became the Project Engineer and Production Manager for a finishing shop dedicated to power generation products. Since 2005 he has worked in the technical sales team for the Powergen Division and has lead this team since 2009.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

Energy is a first priority topic worldwide. Efficiency and Safety of power production and supply are one of the main driving factors in this business field. The development of new steel grades has great influence on a power plant’s process parameters and as a consequence for its economic and ecologic output.

With our new steel grade we offer TÜV and ASME certified material for power plant designers and give them a new opportunity, the power of choice, in the possible use of steel tubes. For us, as a company with subsidiaries in more than 20 countries, webinar conferences are daily work. We believe it is also a good way to get in contact with our customers and interested people.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

It is a matter of fact that the Energy business is a quite conservative business which is often driven by uncertainty and political decisions. To convince market players from new products and / or processes is a huge challenge, in  which we as Vallourec see one of our mayor  tasks.

I would like to use this webinar  to explain the results of our work during the last decade to develop a safe and reliable steel grade and how our customers can participate on these new opportunities. The recommendations according to international standards and first experiences of our customers completes the webinar topics.

3. What is the ideal outcome you would like from doing the webinar?

Of course, our new steel grade is not a magic remedy, but at the end of our webinar the audience should have a clear picture, in which individual situation it makes sense to think about its usage, how they can use and have to tread VM12 SHC and which benefits they can gain.

4. What motivates you?

I think the biggest motivation in my professional career is to have the possibility to be from the “cradle to the grave” involved in processes of developing and promoting something new to a cautious and mostly conservative market.

Spotlight Interview – Alexandra Ross, H.B. Fuller

Alexandra RossAlexandra Ross

Product Regulatory Specialist EIMEA

Alexandra, Product Regulatory Specialist, is responsible for the risk evaluation and compliance matter for H.B. Fuller packaging adhesives in Europe. Alexandra has over 13 years of experience in regulatory affairs with focus on food safety. Alexandra is the vice-chair of the technical working group “paper and packaging” of the Association of the European Adhesive and Sealant Industry (FEICA).

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

We know what matters to customers. And, we understand that food safety is a growing concern for the food and beverage industry. Adhesives are used in many diverse food contact applications. Today’s challenge is that, as an unregulated substance group in Europe, food packaging adhesives can be difficult to evaluate. Running a webinar is an interactive way for us to support our customers in making the right decision to ensure food safety.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

Our goal is to help clarify the roles and responsibilities of both the adhesive manufacturer and user. We will review the process that helps answer the following: Can I use the adhesive as it is? Do I need to carry out tests?

3. What do you most enjoy about your role?

Adhesives are an integral part of our everyday lives. The variety of industries, customers and applications makes my job very interesting. Being a member of the FEICA, European Adhesive and Sealant Association, and the IVK, German Adhesives Association, I enjoy developing guidance and influencing new regulation. It’s also a great opportunity for me to get first-hand information about industry trends and new legal approaches.

4. What would someone be surprised to know about you?

I took part in several triathlons – Olympic distance – a few years back and enjoyed that very much. I am always up for a challenge!

5. What do you do in your leisure time to relax?

Our dog keeps us busy, leading to explorations of picturesque areas and plenty of fresh air.  I also play tennis with a great team of people, which is both highly competitive and fun.

Spotlight Interview – Frank Scheel, JACOBS

Frank Scheel

Comprimo Sulfur Solutions specialist

Frank holds a degree in Chemical engineering and environmental engineering. After his studies, he Joined Jacobs Comprimo Sulfur Solutions (CSS) in 1995 and worked as an engineer in the CSS department. There he worked on numerous technology packages and detailed design jobs in the area of gas treating and sulfur technology. After about 8 years working as an engineer, Frank became the department manager for CSS in Leiden, the Netherlands. Four years ago he took the positions as Business Development manager for the CSS technologies.

1. What are you hoping to achieve from the webinar?

We hope to reach the people who deal with gas treating and Sulfur recovery to convince them that it pays out to invest in thorough studies by the right companies to make sure that the issues are properly handled. It is worthwhile to study all options before going into the actual design phase to see the issues from all angles and to make sure that all options have been considered and the best solution with the best value for money can be selected. We often see companies that only look at one unit and they do not integrate the units. In this way often not the overall optimum solution is selected leading to units that do not operate ideal under all circumstances or to very high overall investment costs.

2. What is your favourite thing about presenting to a live audience?

The interaction with people and being able to listen and learn from the discussions

3. Who or what was your inspiration for getting you into this industry?

Basically I liked chemistry in high school, so I choose that study in university. After that my first job was with Comprimo and I never left. So maybe the person that had the most influence on me in getting into this business line is the Chemistry teacher in high school with whom we conducted lots and lots of great experiments.

4. What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I like coaching the sports teams of my kids. I coached my sons football team for six year and the past two years I am coaching my daughters field hockey team. It is fun to see these kids enjoying to play sports together.

5. And finally…

Porsche or BMW? Impossible for me to choose because there’s only one car that really appeals to me and that is the Volkswagen Beetle.

Laptop or Tablet? Tablet

Red or white wine? Difficult choice, but if I have to choose it will be red.

Football or tennis? Football

Spotlight Interview – Paul Daniel, Vaisala

Paul DanielsPaul Daniel, Sr. Regulatory Compliance Expert at Vaisala, has 17 years of validation experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

He has extensive practical grounding in applying the Good Manufacturing Practices and principles of FDA 21 CFR Parts 11, 210, 211, and 820 and specializes in authoring and executing validation protocols. He has a B.S. in biology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

Through webinars, we are trying to reach a wider audience, to share the vast amount of knowledge that Vaisala carries regarding measurement, and to show the application of this knowledge to the specific needs of Life Sciences businesses.  At Vaisala we truly think that we can make the world a better place by helping people measure it better.  In this case, we are talking about measuring temperature and humidity in the spaces that are used to store temperature sensitive drugs that will have a real-life impact on the patients and their families.

What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

I hope to convey how simple temperature mapping really can be.  Temperature mapping is a key part of showing adherence to Good Distribution Practices (GDP) regulations. The need for this skill is increasing drastically as regulatory focus on GDP increases worldwide.  The recent revision to GDP are all placing increased responsibility on the parties farther down the chain – distributors, shippers,  even pharmacies.  These are groups that are not familiar with mapping, and have a lot of questions about how to do it correctly.  Success, in this webinar, would be showing that group of people how easy temperature mapping  can be.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I really enjoy the customer interaction.  I find helping people find the answers to their questions to be very fulfilling.  Everybody wins.  Our customers get the answers (or at least clearer questions) to move forward with their projects, which are generally focused on improving people’s quality of life; and I get to help!

What would someone be surprised to know about you?

My initial training was in Biology.  I found I didn’t really care much for the lab, and instead applied myself to some field studies.  My first job out of college was catching rattlesnakes, to help some colleagues with their post-doctoral studies.  It was fun, but didn’t pay well, despite the dangers.  Though I returned to the lab, this time a calibration and validation lab, I often moonlighted in interesting side-jobs: I have taught wilderness survival classes, raised chickens and goats on a small farm, and manufactured hand-made wooden beer mugs.

What do you do in your leisure time to relax?

My leisure is spent hiking, playing guitar, or dog training.  I am the proud owner of a French Bulldog puppy named Ruby.  She is currently teaching me the true meaning of stubborn.

Sara has a Bachelors Degree in Art from Elon University in North Carolina. Her professional focus has been in the areas of Graphic Design and Color Theory. Sara assists PCC and her customers with color identification and development from both trending and commercial perspectives.

1.       Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

We chose Business Review Webinars because they have a very good reputation for bringing the right customers to the event.  Also, they are very good at helping to develop proper support and marketing data to generate the interest to the target audience.  Finally, they help us monitor the results of the webinar to assure the interested participants are contacted and we maximize our potential reach!!  They provide a professional process that works.

2.       What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

We look forward to showing the audience an inventive new application to aid in the design process.  We want to make choosing colors and designing simple, easy and (why not) fun.  We also want to demonstrate how an application like isaac® can help with speed to market which we all know is important in getting products to our consumers.

3.        What is the ideal outcome you would like from doing the webinar?

Our ideal outcome for the webinar is to reach a broader audience that would otherwise not get the chance to hear about our company and application.  We would like for designers and engineers to see what is possible when engaging color and product development using new technology.  We want to have the participants ask for the app and use it immediately and help us beta the next versions.  We hope to reach more into the creative side of packaging and work more with design and marketing departments.  We believe that isaac® will help us to breach that gap.

 4.    What has been your best holiday and where would you recommend visiting?

There is a special place in my heart for the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  The Outer Banks are a series of sandbar islands that stretch the entire length of the North Carolina coast. It is a place where my husband’s and my family have vacationed from many years.  We love it so much that we even got married there in Kitty Hawk, NC.  I would recommend this area to anyone who loves sand, surf, lighthouses and the peace and quiet of nature.

 5.       What motivates you?

I have found over the years and being creative and problem solving motivates me.  I see every creative endeavor as a puzzle that seeks a solution.  Using logic and creativity together to find a solution breathes energy into me and the project.  It is the journey that is the most important component in the process.  What happens between the problem and the solution is where true creativity thrives.

Spotlight Interview – Pavel Marek CEO NEOX

untitledPavel Marek, MD, Founder and CEO of NEOX.

I am glad that through this webinar we have the opportunity to address not only our present and future partners & clients, but also the clinical research community as a whole. During our more than 10 year history we have accumulated a vast amount of experience which we want to share. Our motivation behind this is not strictly related to business. We are strongly focused on quality, and I have personally observed that the best way to push one´s limits is to expose oneself to the vast ocean of external opinions, views and ideas. I am sure that we have a lot to say, but at the same time we always want to learn more; however, this is impossible without the free exchange of experience. This webinar can be an ideal tool for such an interchange. I hope that you will enjoy its content, and I look forward to hearing your ideas and opinions.

1. What should participants expect to learn from the webinar?

There are three main topics we would like to address:

First, we are aware that clinical trials are becoming more and more global. That is why we would like to address the question whether there is still something which makes the region of CEE attractive compared to other emerging regions, such as East Asia or South America. Obviously, our answer is yes, and we would like to give you a few facts to prove it. Second, we are aware of how regulatory hurdles can influence time limits of the study. Our regulatory affairs director will tell you more about overcoming these hurdles. And third, we know that it is sometimes difficult to find common ground between US-style contracts required by sponsors and continental contractual approaches acceptable to the sites. We would like to hear your feedback and will be happy to share our ideas about it as well.

2. Can you describe your company ’Neox’?

My brother and I started the company together back in 2004 with only three people. We were a classic small CRO offering mainly monitoring services at Czech sites. Now, we have grown to around 200 employees, and we are active in the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland, Hungary, Germany and also in the Nordic countries. I am proud that we still stick to the original tenets that were present when we founded the company. We are dedicated to maintaining our local expertise and focus on quality.

3. What do you most enjoy about your role?

My greatest pleasure is being involved in an ever-evolving landscape of medical research leading to new clinical trials. I feel proud when I see that our clients appreciate our services and want to stay with us. It is refreshing for me to be in the center of our relatively young team of likeminded people. All these factors are important drivers of my enthusiasm.

4. What movie would you recommend to watch and why?

For relaxation, I certainly recommend anything directed by Quentin Tarantino. On the other hand, why not to switch off the TV and relax with a good book instead?

5. What is your favorite place in the world and why?

Prague, unsurprisingly. It is a magical city, and anyone who has ever seen the silhouette of Prague castle at dawn or dusk knows why.

Spotlight Interview – Paul Otway, JEE

dKRjzPnVPaul Otway, Senior Subsea Engineer

Paul has extensive experience in subsea pipeline design and integrity projects for global operators. His particular focus is the management of pipeline ILI campaigns including technical definition of pigging campaigns, pig selection/design, review and HAZOP of procedures and offshore management of pigging operations. Paul won the Subsea UK Young Emerging Talent award in 2013 for his ILI work.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

At Jee we are not just an engineering consultancy, we are also a training company. We are passionate about sharing lessons learned and using our 25 years of engineering experience to train the industry. It’s a privilege to be able to pass on some of our knowledge to our loyal customer base as well as those less familiar with Jee.

 2. What is your favourite thing about presenting and why?

My favourite thing about presenting is the opportunity to share knowledge and opinions on subjects that interest me and gaining feedback from those present. In my day-to-day working life, presentations are usually an opportunity to share project plans or technical ideas with other interested parties. I prefer to use presenting as the basis for enabling a thoughtful and productive discussion rather than simply a lecture by me to others. PowerPoint and other presentation software are powerful tools and very useful for providing structure to a presentation, but all too often they are relied upon to include all the detail as well. The visual presentation should not be a distraction to the audience, and the focus should always be on what is being said rather than what is on the screen. I find this allows a more open environment and others feel more comfortable to interrupt and ask questions. Presenting online will be a new experience for me with new challenges as it does not facilitate that multi-way discussion throughout the presentation.

3. What do you wish other people knew about Jee?

That we have engineering capabilities spanning the whole life-of-field! All too often our clients use us for a particular service or discipline, and because of the high standard of technical service they receive, they presume this is our specialist field. In reality our capabilities and dedicated discipline divisions could give them the confidence they have with Jee on all their projects.

4. What do you most enjoy about your role?

One aspect I really relish about my role is that it allows me to get very actively involved and invested in long-term projects, building relationships over time with those I work with, including clients, colleagues and 3rd parties. Some of the projects I have undertaken have been very high-profile within the client company, and have included significant technical challenges. I feel fortunate to have had these opportunities and been entrusted with such responsibilities so early in my career as it has allowed (and forced) me to develop and learn rapidly as well as being able to specialise early in an area and technology that is evolving and developing all the time.

5. Where would you recommend visiting in the world and why?

Based on places I have been (rather than places I want to go) I would highly recommend Rio de Janeiro. I visited Rio for two weeks in 2007 as a student and had an amazing stay. The city and the landscape around are absolutely stunning and it is an incredibly vibrant city which I found to be very welcoming to tourists. There are so many things to do and see in Rio (Cristo Redentor statue, Sugar Loaf mountain, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches). I even managed to get to a Rio football derby between Botofogo and Fluminense at the Maracana, and that is where you see the real Brazilian passions come out. While there is an undeniable edginess about the city with such wealth and poverty situated literally side by side on many streets, at no point did I feel unsafe or vulnerable. So long as you have a little common sense there is little to worry about and the people are generally incredibly friendly – however if you do insist on wearing a Rolex and having a £2000 camera on show you may well make yourself a target. With the World Cup in Brazil this year and the Olympics in Rio in 2016, I can think of at least two great excuses to visit Rio!
