Dr. Andrew J. Reason, CEO and MD, BioPharmaSpec

dr-andrew-j-reasonFollowing a Ph.D in “Characterization of O-linked GlcNAc in nucleoplasmic and cytoplasmic glycoproteins” and a short period of postdoctoral research at Imperial College, Andrew joined M-Scan in 1994 as a biochemist, and rose to become Managing Director of the M-Scan Limited and M-Scan GmbH laboratories.

Andrew is Managing Director and CEO of BioPharmaSpec, a CRO he co-founded with Prof. Howard Morris early in 2014.

You have said anyone developing a biosimilar should attend this webinar. What would be the key takeaway message for the audience?

Structural Characterization is at the core of demonstrating comparability of Biosimilars to Reference Medicinal Products (RMPs). Successful development of a Biosimilar is always underpinned by a strong analytical package. This webinar has been designed to provide attendees with some understanding of the regulatory requirements and analytical package requirements to characterize and compare Biosimilars with RMPs.

What do your clients tell you is the biggest challenge in developing a pipeline of biosimilars?

Biologics are complicated to manufacture at the best of times. Biological processes are hard to control, and manufacturing a Biological to be comparable with a Reference Product is very difficult. Each product has its own individual challenges but it is usually the Post Translational Modifications (PTMs), and glycosylation in particular, which are hardest to control and represent the biggest challenge in producing a Biosimilar.

Unlike many other small-medium sized CROs, BioPharmaSpec has invested in having labs in different locations- how important is this global presence?

As well as our laboratories in Europe and North America, BioPharmaSpec also has a global Sales/Business Development presence with offices in Europe, North America, India and South East Asia. We feel it is important to be close to our clients and provide local business and technical support across time zones. This allows us to be on hand when needed and to act as an extension of our client’s in-house product development team.

You are a visiting Professor at the University of Warwick. How do academic collaborations support and advance the biopharmaceutical industry?

Academic collaborations allow small to medium-sized companies like BioPharmaSpec to explore and develop new processes and methods. For example, through my visiting Professorship at Warwick University we are investigating the power of combining data obtained from Circular Dichroism, FT-IR, Raman Spectroscopy and NMR for secondary and tertiary structure analysis of Biopharmaceuticals.

Throughout your career, you have travelled all over the world to present at conferences and meet with clients. What has been your favourite place and why?

It is very hard to choose as I have been lucky to visit so many places and meet some fantastic people. I think if I had to choose one place it would be San Francisco because as well as it being an interesting place to do business due to the large number of innovative start-up companies, there are also plenty of great golf courses in the Bay area! I always try to visit Napa and Sonoma for the wine tasting when I am there.

Pim Spierenburg, Head of Smart Markets, EMEA, OMNETRIC Group

Pim SpierenburgAs VP Smart Market EMEA within OMNETRIC he is responsible for the solution architecture of meter data management, demand response and VPP solution in Europe, Middle East and Africa. He has 12 years of Utility experience of which he mostly worked in Meter Data Management and Smart Metering.

Prior to joining OMNETRIC in 2014, Pim was working as senior solution architect within Accenture Smart Grid Services for 5 years. Before that he worked for Itron and CGI.

1. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

Clean energy has arrived in many forms, from PV to wind power, but it’s still hard for operators to integrate it reliably into the grid and manage it effectively.  DERMS – Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems – are helping to solve this challenge, providing a single platform to manage load aggregation, storage and generation.

2. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

The topic of DERMS and managing clean energy is one that is not limited to utilities. Indeed, companies, communities, universities and hospitals for example, are all thinking about how they can better manage their energy generation and use in the future.  Business Review Webinars are a good platform for educating a broad audience effectively.

3.  How did you get into the industry and what do you most enjoy about your role?

My start in the industry was implementing new legislation for metering during the deregulation of the Dutch utility market. I then ventured into the world of meter data management and smart metering as a solution architect. Over the last couple of years, I have focused on the potential of using meter data management platforms for other purposes, such as Demand Response and aggregating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) for virtual power plant purposes. In my current role at OMNETRIC Group, I am responsible for the Smart Market portfolio in EMEA. This provides me with the opportunity to work on the cutting edge of new developments on grid end-points, developing new propositions with my team of Solution Architects and Engineers for clients.

4. What are you hoping to achieve in the future in your personal and professional life?

I want to finish the Defi Wind in Gruissan in 2017. It’s the largest annual worldwide gathering of competing windsurfers with over a thousand amateurs and pros launching from the same start line.

5. Where is your favourite place in the world?

That is a tough one, but I will have to go with Sapa in Vietnam.

Dr. Gerallt Williams, Director Scientific Affairs, Aptar Pharma

Dr. Gerallt WilliamsAfter obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of Wales, UK in 1985, Gerallt has held various industrial positions at Monsanto Inc. (UK), Fisons Ltd (UK), Valois (France) and Inhale/Nektar Therapeutics (USA).

Gerallt is now in charge of scientific affairs for the Aptar Pharma Prescription division, Le Vaudreuil, France and is engaged in the development of new devices for nasal, inhaled and injectable drug products.

What made you partner with Business Review Webinars?

Aptar Pharma wanted to reach out to a more global audience in order to share our enthusiasm about intra-nasal drug delivery which is a relatively new drug delivery approach and creating a webinar in partnership with BRW offered us the possibility to achieve this goal.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?

Developing new products that will hopefully bring some relief to patients suffering with difficult medical conditions is ultimately what we are trying to do day in and day out in our roles in the drug delivery industry – the enjoyment is in the journey.

What is your favourite place in the world and why?

I’m Welsh and I’ve been living in various countries during my career including Wales where I was born and grew up, England, the US and France. I feel well in France because I can enjoy a variety of unique experiences … while being so close to the UK!

What about nasal drug delivery are you most looking forward to sharing with the audience?

Although nasal drug delivery is somewhat of a niche area in the pharmaceutical industry we hope to share with the audience the future potential of this drug delivery approach, how ground-breaking and innovative research is being pursued with the possibility to open up a brand new way to treat some very serious and debilitating conditions which are predicted to become more prevalent over the coming decades.  Intranasal route is simple to access and non-invasive, it can be versatile (self-administration vs third-party’s-administration) and used for local and systemic/CNS nose-to-brain treatments – “The nose is the only natural corridor where the brain meets the outside world”.

What do you hope the audience will learn from this webinar?

The webinar is part educational, part setting the scene in the market place and part science and technology. Hopefully the audience will find some new information by participating in the webinar and may be able to identify opportunities for developing products for some of the unmet medical needs in this area via the nasal drug delivery approach.

Adrian Lara, Senior Upstream Analyst – Americas, GlobalData

Adrian LaraAdrian Lara directs GlobalData’s upstream analysis team in charge of conducting quantitative and qualitative research for oil and gas activity in the Americas region. His team monitors the key producing and planned assets in the region and oversees the methodology for specific asset valuations including forecasting assumptions in production and capital expenditure. Adrian has several years of experience as an oil and gas industry analyst, having held different positions within Pemex, where he focused on analysis of oil and gas fundamentals in the context of upstream exporting strategies and international trading.

Adrian was also a visiting research fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in Oxford, UK, where his research focused on oil supply scenarios in the Western Hemisphere. He has a Master of Science in Mineral and Energy Economics from the Colorado School of Mines, with a specialization in oil and gas from the Institut Français du Pétrole. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM).

1. What do you hope the audience will learn from this webinar?

I’d like the audience to gain insight on details related to the production forecast for Brazilian pre-salt resources. There is an enormous potential for these resources to be developed but there also big challenges some of which pertain to incentives to be provided by the government and other to the timeliness of FPSO deployment and final well productivity. I also think Brazil’s oil and gas sector outlook has to be assessed with a comprehensive time-period view considering the last 10 years of development to somehow put in perspective the volatility of the last 3 years and other near-term challenges.

2. What discussions do you look forward to having with the audience?

I think talking about how the pre-salt projects are moving forward in a more constrained equipment and services sector would be relevant. Also discussing possible future sales or farm-outs for offshore deepwater blocks or fields would be an interesting discussion in the context of Petrobras’ unknown strategy for divestment of upstream assets.

3. What do you enjoy most about your role?

Covering the oil and gas sector in the Americas allows me to assess the strategies that players such as IOCs, NOCs, government agencies use in different countries in order to improve their position. In most countries of the continent, other than the US, there is still an important involvement of government agencies through policy or fiscal regulations. However there is still significant variance among countries in the degree the sector openness, clarity of rules, economic and political stability making it very interesting to identify key supply drivers.

4. How did you get into the industry?

I was recruited by the trading arm of Pemex (known in the sector as PMI) about 12 years ago. It was a formative experience. The middle position of the trading arm allowed me to have a exposure to the international functioning of the sector, the organization of the Pemex subsidiaries and the way the  NOC interacts with government and other smaller players. In fact at that time the company was already showing signs of declining productivity in its key offshore fields and the company was well aware of the financial limitations that would eventually lead to a first energy reform attempt in 2008 and the more recent one from 2013.

Michael Hunter, Vice President, Lean Scheduling International

Michael HunterMichael Hunter is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Lean Scheduling International and a key developer of the LSI Print Control system. Prior to joining LSI, Michael spent 20 years working in label printing, heavy equipment, and aerospace. Drawing on his experiences as a label printing executive with responsibilities in both production and sales, Michael developed the LSI Print Control system to improve operational efficiencies and sales management for printing companies who are interested in growing their business and improving their process.

1. How did you get into the industry?

I spent the first decade of my career in the heavy equipment manufacturing industry working in production planning and purchasing. I spent the next ten years in print and packaging, working in various production and sales roles. I was very fortunate that every company I worked for was growing and changing in some significant way, and I always found myself involved in large projects that involved process changes, software implementations, and system integrations. Based on those experiences, moving into my current role in software sales and consulting made perfect sense.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

The potential of our systems to transform their jobs and their organizations. Many people we talk to have never seen the level of functionality and features that we offer so it’s an exciting thing to share with people for the first time.

3. What do you enjoy most about your role?

Bringing different groups in a company together to make meaningful changes in their organization. So often people become siloed and 100% focused on only the problems that affect them. This typically leads nowhere as most problems require work from multiple departments to be solved. Because our systems and implementations involve a wide range of functional areas, we are able to get sales and production talking together and working more effectively.

4. Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

I’ve lived in Los Angeles for most of the last 20 years and I love it here. It’s a great city where you can find and do anything you want. If it’s not right here, which happens occasionally, you can find it within two hours’ drive in any direction.

5. How do you relax in your leisure time?

I have twin daughters who are 8 years old. When I’m not working, I’m doing my best to keep up with them.

As such, he helps them enable mobility and support applications on their respective networks. Moving organizations into the smart transportation mode while obtaining a solid return on investment is what drives his enthusiasm daily.

Mr. Fitzgibbons is a regular presenter at industry conferences and forums, where he has shared his strategic and hands-on experiences with all levels of participants – from engineers in the field to CTOs in the boardroom.

Q: How did you get into the industry?

A: My first job in the wireless industry was for a distributor that sold a lot of different products. There I worked with 10 or 12 different broadband manufacturers, and we would combine and suggest different solutions for different projects and applications. My role was to help package them and communicate to all of our customers which wireless technology fit where, how they were supported and how they could solve different challenges.

At a point in my career, one market that seemed to open up significantly was transportation. It was an area in which cellular was no longer meeting the needs of that market and figuring out how to provide high-speed broadband to moving devices was a real challenge, because most of what broadband had been doing involved static applications. This created new issues for municipal and transportation markets.

When I started to work more on those kinds of applications, I learned about Rajant. It turned out that this unique and difficult challenge of delivering high-speed broadband to moving vehicles via private network is something that Rajant had been doing for 15 years, which took me aback.

I previously had worked with other manufacturers of mesh, but those solutions delivered a compromised version of what mesh could be. So when I heard of Rajant as a mesh company, I thought, I know how to compete against this – until I finally understood that theirs is truly mesh and is able to deliver all it promised. That changed a lot for me.

I was ultimately drawn to this technology because I saw in my experience more and more that we were going to need to deliver high-speed broadband – not just to fixed buildings or towers, but to a lot of devices and a lot of moving vehicles, and I thought Rajant was in great position to do that. I was a believer even before I accepted my current role with them.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your role?

A: I like that it’s consultative and gives me the opportunity to solve very challenging problems for customers. Our customers are companies trying to improve their business by running a number of applications or ramping up their existing network. They are trying to do big things, challenging things, and I like to be able to step in to help them solve their problems and implement something new that will really improve their business. Often, by the time a customer is ready for us, they’re dealing with something that is at a critical point – they absolutely must find a solution that works.

Q: What is your favourite thing about presenting to a live audience?

A: Generally, I like engaging in conversation with people more than presenting, but a presentation can be just another way to get a conversation started. With a presentation, I’m able to provide a group of people with information that is relevant to their business and show them something they may not have been aware of, or a way of doing something they may not have thought of. I enjoy educating people, and when I can tell active and engaged participants about creative network solutions that are relevant to and helpful for their businesses, it’s a great feeling.

Q: What motivates you?

A: I enjoy the level of work, and the engagement, but what I really enjoy is figuring things out. I meet with customers that have unique challenges, and often we are not the first ones they call. I truly enjoy the consultative, problem-solving aspect of listening to customers and understanding their needs, how we can improve their business and how we can grow revenue or optimize their investment together – and there is a real feeling of accomplishment when I can help them make their business better.

Q: Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

A: Well, I just got back from a few days in Yosemite, which was simply incredible. Before that, I was in Iceland, and saw the Northern Lights and did some hiking – it was spectacular. But really, my favourite place in the world is home. I am often traveling as part of my job, and the best thing in the world is coming home to see my wonderful family. After days or even weeks on road, in airports and hotels, there is nothing better.
