Supply Talk: Aneta Manningtonova’s Blog – May Edition

Welcome to our Online Newsletter: Supply Talk. This issue is packed full of the latest information including our upcoming and on demand webinars and the latest news within the industry.

In this month’s spotlight interviews we would like to introduce Cheryl Johnson from PantoneLIVE and Jude Mason from NSF InternationalThey will be discussing their thoughts on their upcoming webinar.

Like in our previous newsletters, we enjoy exploring the different traditions from all across the world. This month, we’ve seen (and will continue to see) a whole range of celebrations. At the beginning of May, we saw a public holiday known as “May Day”. This public holiday coincides with “International Workers’ Day” in what is a traditional spring holiday for many cultures; where dancing, singing and consumption of vast amounts of cake are part of the celebrations.

MaibaumSpecifically in English history, to celebrate this day there is a traditional dance known as Maypole Dancing. This involved trees being cut down and erected as a pole in the villages. Locals would dance around the pole to mark the beginning of summer and commencement of planting of the crops. It is suggested that the tallest maypole stood more than 143 feet (44 meters) high in 1661, London.

This year, May Day celebrations fell on a Thursday which meant that many mainland European countries were treated with a long weekend; no doubt spent enjoying quality time with friends and family. Interestingly, even though May Day is celebrated on the first of May, prior to 1752 it was actually celebrated 11 days earlier.

If your country, your town or even your family has a unique tradition please email me, as I would love to hear about it. Maybe it will feature in our next newsletter!

Thank you to everyone who commented on our blog and participated in our quiz question last month. For those of you who missed it our question was:

During the time it takes you to read this sentence, how many 12-ounce aluminium cans are made?

The answer is 50,000 cans.

If you fancy your chances at winning a voucher, simply answer this month’s quiz question – Good luck!

Our first Knowledge Sharing Webinar is taking place next month on June 10. Spotlight Interview: Cheryl Johnson, Global Business Development, PantoneLIVE

Cheryl JohnsonCheryl Johnson is currently Global Business Development for PantoneLIVE, across Esko, X-Rite & Pantone. She has 26 years experience in the packaging and prepress industry spanning two continents. Starting her career in the repro house of England, and progressing to production/operations management in the US. She joined Esko 10 years ago in a sales capacity, spending the last two years at X-Rite Pantone being immersed in color, and heading up sales efforts during the launch of PantoneLIVE.

1. What is the most informative fact of the webinar?

That it is possible to achieve color consistency, there is effort that has to go into it, taking control of the color and the process is essential , however by embracing today’s technology and the digital world we live in, it is possible.

 2. Who or what was your inspiration for getting you into this industry?

I don’t remember, it was a long time ago… I think I always wanted to be a designer, and then discovered I really didn’t have the imagination for it. But I was very good at taking something and making it better. Like prepping a design for press, or mechanical artwork, so I fell into the pre-media side.

3. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve done within your current role?

It’s all interesting, I’m in color, for me this was always the most exciting part of packaging, and now I get to focus on it. I still find it exciting to call on Brands on whose products I use, and to see things on shelf I was involved with, I also get to travel quite bit which can be fun.

4. How do you relax in your leisure time?

I like to read, preferably on my swing chair in the garden… I’ve just spent 6 months reading the first 5 Books from a Song of Ice & Fire (Game of Thrones), I like to plant things too, love being outside, hanging with friends, driving my sports car.. I’m about to go exploring around Peru for a week.

5. And finally …

Porsche or BMW? Maserati!!

Laptop or Tablet? Laptop, if it’s a Mac

Red or white wine? I prefer Beer

Soccer or tennis? Tennis

You can register for for Cheryl’s upcoming webinar ‘Color Everywhere (and everywhere the same)’, which takes place on the 22nd May at 10am New Ytork/3pm London by clicking here.

Spotlight Interview: Sri Chilukuri, VP Product Marketing, Intralinks

Sri ChilukuriSri is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and software executive. Sri is currently Vice President of Product Marketing at Intralinks, the leading beyond the firewall collaboration solutions provider for the life science industry. Before this he spent several years advising innovative technology start-ups such as Immunetech. Sri co-founded and served as President & CEO of Content Circles which provides a cloud-based solution for secure cross-company file sharing.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

Over the past few years, life sciences companies have been shedding core competencies and relying more on strategic outsourcing to streamline and augment their development efforts and go-to-market strategies. As a consequence, it has become essential for critical information to be shared with external partners in a timely, traceable and efficient way. In this talk, I’d like to share my thoughts on the challenges, as well as the benefits, of using cloud-based collaboration solutions for the purpose.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

A typical life sciences company has a myriad of external collaboration needs, from highly structured clinical trial management, to ad hoc content sharing between its employees and partners on a day-to-day basis. And there are over a hundred cloud-based collaboration solutions to choose from to address these needs! With so much choice, the enterprise has a critical choice to make: Adopt multiple point solutions or a single platform, to address its external collaboration needs. In this presentation, I’ll examine the pros and cons of both approaches, and propose a framework for choosing the right approach for any enterprise.

3. What is the ideal outcome you would like from doing the webinar?

First, I’d like to get in touch with the audience to better understand how they use cloud-based collaboration technologies to accelerate productivity of R&D processes while protecting their IP.  Second, I’d like to show the audience how they can indeed address all of their external collaboration needs with a single platform, securely.

4. How do you relax in your leisure time?

Whenever time permits, I like to be outdoors jogging or biking, and playing tennis with our two boys (17 and 13 years old) and board games with our daughter (9 years old).  I also enjoy reading books, generally biographies of economists and politicians.

5. What motivates you?

What motives me most is “doing the impossible” with a set of dedicated and like-minded people, whether they are colleagues, customers or partners. It all started out in college and then continued on in my career when I was fortunate to have had great mentors and colleagues who enabled me to do “impossible” things.

Sri will be presenting Intralinks’ webinar ‘Facilitating R&D Collaborations through the Cloud’ on 5th June at 3pm London time. Click here to see more details and register your place.

What Can the Cloud Do for R&D?

IntralinksSri is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and software executive with a proven track record of successful business leadership.  Sri currently serves as Vice President of Product Marketing for Intralinks, the leading beyond the firewall collaboration solutions provider for the life science industry. Prior to Intralinks, Sri spent several years advising innovative technology startups such as Immunetech, the inventor of MyAllergyTest, the first FDA-cleared direct-to-consumer allergy diagnostic.  Sri co-founded and served as President & CEO of Content Circles, an innovative company providing a cloud-based solution for secure cross-company file sharing and team collaboration, from its inception in 2007 through its acquisition in 2011 by Skype.  Earlier in his career, Sri was a major player in helping Xerox revolutionize their enterprise content management (ECM) offering.  At Adobe Systems, where he spent almost 10 years, Sri was a key contributor to the initial development and marketing of Adobe Acrobat and PostScript.  Sri holds an MBA and MS in Computer Science from Santa Clara University.

“For life sciences organizations, the word of today is without a doubt, collaboration. With the continuous evolution of new technologies, coupled with the decreasing costs of outsourcing research, life sciences organizations have started shedding their core competencies and depending heavily on strategic outsourcing to restructure their development initiatives and go-to-market strategies.

I’ve had many years of experience in technology, primarily around cloud-based solutions and secure cross-company file sharing. I’m currently the Vice President of Product Marketing at Intralinks, the leading beyond the firewall collaboration solutions provider for the life sciences industry. At Intralinks, we enable our users to securely store information, share content and collaborate with multiple partners, anytime, anywhere. Intralinks VIA™‎ which helps life sciences organizations take lifetime control of their most important information was designed to support the demanding requirements of life sciences IT and central compliance functions, while freeing employees to reach new levels of productivity.

In our experiences, we’ve seen innovative life sciences companies migrate from the traditional fully integrated pharmaceutical company model (FIPCO) in search of more streamlined R&D paradigms, like the fully integrated pharmaceutical network (FIPNet). In moving away from the traditional model, life sciences organizations have replaced their core competencies with partners. But while FIPNet might be more efficient and cost-effective, it still brings challenges – like maintaining information security, timelines and auditable trails across organizations. With the increased reliance on collaboration with external providers and partners, beyond the firewall sharing has become unavoidable. In R&D, being able to share information quickly and frequently between multiple business partners is vital, but it’s even more important that the information shared be secure and compliant. Often when sharing content between several parties, data can become lost and private information can be mistakenly shared with the wrong person. Considering the sensitivity of R&D information and the regulatory nature of the life sciences industry, it’s essential that organizations take the utmost precaution when collaborating.

The four most common questions I hear from life sciences organizations about working across the enterprise are:

1)     How can we accelerate productivity of partner relationships?

2)     How can we protect IP and maintain compliance in the cloud?

3)     What are the security and governance requirements of cloud-based solutions?

4)     What should we consider when evaluating cloud-based collaboration solutions?

Fortunately, we live in an age where secure collaboration is possible – even for organizations in highly regulated industries.  The challenge is keeping information secure and compliant without putting extreme restrictions on how teams share content and collaborate within their organization and with external business partners.  Due to its benefits like security, streamlined auditing and reporting, and accelerated execution of projects and processes, it’s no surprise that life sciences companies are turning to the cloud and SaaS to ensure higher levels of compliance and streamline communication with their collaborative partnerships.

To educate life sciences organizations on how to accelerate productivity, securely and compliantly by collaborating through the cloud, Intralinks has partnered with Business Review WebinarsOn June 5th, 2014 at 10:00 AM EST / 3:00 PM BST I will co-host a webinar with BRW to review the common challenges life sciences organizations face when attempting to streamline communication with external partners as well as discuss the benefits and risks of moving to the cloud.

I hope you will join me for the ‘Facilitating R&D Collaborations through the Cloud webcast on June 5th at 10:00 AM EST / 3:00 PM BST. To register, please click hereSee you there!”

Spotlight Interview: Paul Denny-Gouldson, Vice President, Solution Strategy, IDBS

Paul Denny-GouldsonAs VP of Solution Strategy, Paul heads the overall strategic planning for the various market verticals and scientific domains that IDBS works in. By working both internally across IDBS and externally with customers and partners, Paul is charged with the exploration and creation of new products, solutions and service offerings. He joined IDBS in 2005 as part of the acquisition of his ELN company and has spearheaded the drive to make E WorkBook Suite the market leader.

Prior to this, Paul founded a number of companies focused on combining science, technology and business. He started his career as a Post Doc and subsequently Senior Scientist at Sanofi-Synthelabo Toulouse (now Sanofi) for just under five years, where he managed a multidisciplinary molecular and cell biology department.

Paul obtained his PhD in Computational Biology from Essex University in 1996, and has authored over 25 scientific papers and book chapters.

1.  Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

At IDBS, we feel it’s important not only to communicate about our innovation in products, but also to share our knowledge and expertise on the latest trends in the R&D industry. Through webinars, we find great value in the live interactive Q&A. This helps us to get better understanding of our audience’s needs and challenges. We really see them as mutual learning and enrichment.

This is our first webinar with Business Review Webinars, we chose them because we have been quite impressed with the targeted audiences they have across all industries we are operating in – pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals, energy, engineering, food and beverage, and consumer goods – and all over the world.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

The way that IDBS and its technologies are able to bring transformational business benefits to R&D organizations across many industries. IDBS have deep domain expertise in many areas of science and technology. Our customers vary across so many different areas, and yet they always reflect the same messages – how we help drive innovation, deliver massive efficiency gains and develop methods to capture and really leverage IP in a way that it becomes a knowledge base.

3. What is the ideal outcome you would like from doing the webinar?

We would like to provide our audience with forward-thinking and relevant inputs on how to improve collaboration and productivity in R&D. We would like our participants to perceive us as ahead of the game and raise awareness and interest among participants who maybe did not know IDBS before. We are looking forward to sharing ideas and interacting with them.

 4. Where is your favorite place in the world and why?

My favorite place in the world…that’s a tough one to narrow down. It varies per continent – in the USA it is San Francisco – because of the climate and great landscape, scenery and attitude. In Europe, it is Toulouse, France – I lived there for five years, and I love the culture and the friendliness and welcoming people. And in Asia it is Tokyo, Japan – which is so efficient and safe but also very culturally different and intense and exciting.

5. What motivates you?

Making a difference, leaving something good behind and learning new stuff.

Register for IDBS’ upcoming webinar on the 28th May at 3pm London. Paul will be discussing how you can transform the way you do R&D in just 5 years! Read more here.

Spotlight Interview: Steve Burton, CEO, ProMetic BioSciences Ltd, ProMetic BioSciences

Steve BurtonDr Burton was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer of ProMetic BioSciences Ltd in February 2006 having served with the company since its formation. Dr Burton has over 23 years of commercial bioprocess and company management experience.

Dr Burton gained his Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge, UK researching novel affinity ligands for use in protein purification. After spending 2 years as a Research Scientist with Delta Biotechnology Ltd (now Novozymes) Dr Burton joined a new start-up company Affinity Chromatography Ltd as Research Manager and, following the establishment of a successful R&D group which developed Mimetic Ligand™ adsorbents and won the Queens Award for Technological Achievement, he was appointed R&D Director.

Following the acquisition in 1999 of Affinity Chromatography Ltd by ProMetic Life Sciences Inc., Dr Burton has held a variety of positions within the company and has established numerous commercial collaborations with medical and biopharmaceutical companies.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with Business Review Webinars?

We were looking for an effective way to reach new customers and Business Review Webinars seemed to offer the best solution. With restrictions on travel budgets and the relatively high cost of attending conferences and associated travel time, webinars are becoming a very attractive and cost-effective alternative with the potential to reach a much wider audience than conventional seminars.

2. What are you looking forward to explaining to the audience?

ProMetic has some very innovative products and technologies which are very relevant to modern-day bio manufacturing processes. However, not everyone is aware of what ProMetic has to offer. We wish to use the webinar to explain to the audience how we can help customers develop highly effective purification processes that provide increased yields, enhanced levels of product safety and reduced cost of goods. Central to this is our ability to develop robust and inexpensive affinity adsorbents (Mimetic® Ligand adsorbents) which can be directed to the capture and purification of almost any biomolecule, especially therapeutic proteins. They can also be used for the capture and removal of trace impurities, potential contaminants and pathogens.

3. What is the ideal outcome you would like from doing the webinar?

We would like our brand to be better recognised and to provide potential new customers with a greater understanding of our core capabilities. Of course, some actual sales leads would be good too!

4. What’s the best book you’ve ever read and would recommend?

That would have the be “Longitude” by Dava Sobel. The book tells the story of John Harrison, an engineer and clock maker who developed highly accurate time pieces as a solution to the problem of measuring longitude at sea which was a significant problem for navigators in the early eighteenth century. There are many parallels in this book with the challenges faced by modern day innovators such as resistance to new ideas and technologies, access to funding, dealing  with protectionist measures deployed by the establishment of the day and the need for focus and sheer hard graft to deliver a product which achieves the required level of performance. Ultimately this is a story of technological triumph in the face of years of adversity and the development of a product that changed the world.

5. What motivates you?

I like to succeed in what I do and develop solutions to problems. I love the challenge of taking a seemingly intractable problem and reducing it to a simple solution. If anyone wants to motivate me just tell me something I am working on cannot be done!
