    What alternatives are there to optimized animal models?

    The research and development spend by Pharmaceutical companies has continued to rise in the last decade, and at the same time witnessed fewer new drugs coming to market. Late stage failures are proving to be particularly expensive, so the greatest challenge is to identify these potential failures earlier and cheaper. One key approach is to focus effort on target validation: by delivering fewer but stronger candidates earlier, drug development teams could dramatically reduce late stage attrition.

    Head and Founder of the Imperial College London Drug Discovery Centre

    Cathy is Head and Founder of the Imperial College London Drug Discovery Centre. The Centre focuses on validation of novel therapeutic targets, the identification and optimization of small molecule and biological approaches to these targets and their progression towards clinical proof of concept. The Centre is a 'virtual biotech' within academia enabling translation towards the clinic and manages a portfolio of projects ranging from Malaria to Oncology.

    Cathy completed her PhD in Clinical Science (Oncology) at University College London in 1989. She is a pharmacologist with more than 20 years experience of drug discovery within GlaxoSmithKline ranging from target validation, through lead optimisation, candidate characterisation and phase I to IV clinical trials. She has also lead project teams to identify over 20 development compound candidates in a range of therapeutic areas, and to the discovery and development of eleven marketed drugs.

    Stuart Farrow,

    Director -Respiratory Therapy Area, GlaxoSmithKline

    Stuart Farrow is a director in the GlaxoSmithKline respiratory therapy area, and also visiting Professor of Experimental Therapeutics at the University of Manchester, where he currently leads a major discovery research collaboration between the University and GSK. Stuart has more than 20 years of drug discovery experience in the pharmaceutical sector, with a particular focus on inflammation and respiratory disease, and has led numerous drug discovery programmes from initial target identification and validation through to clinical proof of concept. He has more than 50 peer reviewed publications, lectures on target discovery to MSc students at several UK universities and is regularly invited to present on target discovery and validation at international respiratory disease conferences.
