A Common Vision for the Grid of the Future

The Friends of the Supergrid is a group of international companies and organisations (22 members) with a mutual interest in promoting the policy agenda for a European Supergrid. Our concept of a Supergrid is ‘An electricity transmission system, mainly based on direct current, designed to facilitate large-scale sustainable power generation in remote areas for transmission to centres of consumption, one of whose fundamental attributes will be the enhancement of the market in electricity ‘.

The Supergrid will be built out in phases, initially connecting the current crop of offshore wind generators to existing grids. As a first step (Phase 1) SuperNodes could be built in the North Sea by 2020-2025 using 2015 technology to cluster offshore wind generation for bulk delivery. This grid will ultimately be linked to supply electricity across the EU. Explanations will be provided on why we need a Supergrid, how it can be built in practice and what could be the regulatory framework required to create it.

    Key Learning Objectives

    • Supergrid will be the electricity transmission backbone of Europe’s decarbonised power sector, essential to meet the EU energy policy goals by 2050.
    • Supergrid will strengthen the European security of supply by developing large-scale sustainable power generation in remote areas for transmission to centers of consumption.
    • Supergrid will create another global opportunity for European companies to export sustainable energy technology and will finally move the EU towards a single market in electricity.
    • Supergrid is not an extension of existing or planned point to point HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) interconnectors between particular EU Member States. On the contrary, the Supergrid will allow future generation to be built where resources are op
