Today, coal fired boilers have to deal with a multitude of regulations controlling their emissions to the environment. At the same time, they are challenged by alternative fuels and production technologies with an emphasis on potential savings in CO₂ emissions. This creates a difficult environment for deciding whether or not to invest further in emission reduction technology, which typically suffers from the prejudgement of being capital expenditure intensive while also increasing operational expenditures.

This presentation will address intelligent integration of different process steps into a synergistic solution, targeted for control of both NOx, SO₂ and PM. Additionally, the presented solution shows ways to increase boiler heat rate through exploitation of the latent heat of vaporization, thereby reducing fuel consumption and subsequent CO₂ emissions. Side stream integration allows for performance and consumption improvement of existing equipment, while tailoring the solution for site specific conditions without putting production at risk.
