Challenges during transport, storage, handling and installation of pipes
Corrosion protection coatings play a significant role in the overall performance, integrity and lifetime of steel pipelines. The paper describes the important design criteria to choose the right PE or PP coating system for a pipeline project.
Here not only the operating temperature, but especially the transportation distance for the pipes, the intermediate storage and installation-conditions and -climate play a major role. An overview of existing polyolefin systems for onshore and offshore is given.
This selection might also be influenced by the later applied field joint system as it may also require specific components of the system or specific tolerances. The right combination of quality testings performed and specified for the coatings should ensure, that the pipeline owner will get the level of quality, he has specified and paid for. A short reflection to the latest draft standard FDIS21809-1 for 3 layer coatings, which will be published now during 2011.
During the installation in the field, the pipes are welded to each other. The uncoated pipe ends, the so called cut back area, has to receive a durable protection and coating after welding. A chain is as strong as its weakest link, so there should be the same high focus on the performance level when selecting the field joint system.
This is the area with the most detected problems after some years of operation. The majority of field joints are done by shrinksleeves or cold applied tape with rather low requirement and finally performance level. The paper presents a new, improved method for PE field joint coating for onshore pipelines with the aim to fulfil the level of the minimum requirements of the factory applied coatings.

Dipl. Ing. Norbert Jansen, Borealis Polymere GmbH, Application Marketing Manager Oil & Gas Business Unit Pipe Borealis Norbert, born in 1962, finished his degree as mechanical engineer at the Fachhochschule Niederrhein Krefeld, Germany in 1987.
He works since 1988 for the former Neste Chemicals which is since a joint venture in 1994 BOREALIS AG. He has started as a Sales Manager in the Business Unit for Blowmoulding and Injectionmoulding of Polyolefines and joined the Business Unit Pipe in 1991 as Sales Manager in Germany and neighbor countries.
In September 2004 he left the sales and became Application Marketing Manager for Hot & Cold water systems with worldwide responsibility for the PEX and PP-R in-house systems and in 2008 moved his position and is now Application Marketing Manager Oil and Gas with global product marketing responsibility.

- Quite often the external corrosion protection system is chosen only based on following the operating temperature of the pipeline specification, but the design temperature includes transport, handling, installation etc
- Black bimodal HDPE coating is covering a broad temperature range for handling and operating pipelines.
- The draft ISO21809-1 standard for 3 layer coating can only be the base for a pipeline project, where additional higher requirements have to be defined, as the standard is generally seen as low.
- The new Wehocoat/Borcoat PE field joint coating technology for onshore pipelines offers a superior performance compared to the traditionally used shrink and tape systems.
