Tom Homer, Managing Director, EMEA, Telstra

Tom HomerWe recently caught up with Tom Homer ahead of the Telstra webinar ‘Connecting Companies: Strategic Partnerships for the Digital Age‘ to find out a little more about him. Find out what he had to say below.

Tell us about your company and your areas of expertise?

Telstra is a leading telecommunications and technology company. We have been operating successfully on an international level for more than 70 years, having built a world class network and established customer relationships and partnerships with some of the most innovative companies around the world. In the UK and Europe our focus is on the large enterprise market where we provide a range of solutions including managed network services, global connectivity and cloud.

As is often said in tech circles, software is eating the world, and it certainly is creating opportunities for Telstra to better serve our customers. We have started offering what is called Software Defined Networking and Network Functions Virtualisation on our network across our global Points of Presence, which makes it easier for customers to provision the services they need quickly and in a simple way.

Beyond traditional telecommunications services we are also developing our business in new areas such as software, e-Health and monetization of video streaming.
Tell us about your IT career?

I’ve been working in IT for the past twenty five years, having begun my career at AT&T before moving to Energis, the fourth largest telecommunications company in the UK at the time.

It was during my time at Energis that the concept of cloud and its potential to unlock real business value was gaining popularity, and one of my favourite projects was working with Boots to launch their foray into online digital photo sharing.

I joined Telstra in 2011 and was tasked with spearheading our growth in the UK and into new territories. Based in London, today I’m responsible for developing and driving the business strategy across Europe, the Middle East and Africa along with growing our relationship with multinational corporations across the region.

What tech do you expect to be involved with in ten years’ time?

In my view, there is no doubt that software will continue to dominate the IT industry over the next ten years, in particular the rise of software defined networking (SDN).

Businesses are facing ever increasing demands on network bandwidth, which is being driven largely by the evolution of modern, dispersed and collaborative workplaces, often with the need to transport rich content and communicate through new digital channels.

Business leaders are adopting “anywhere, anytime” flexible workforces, with an appetite for cloud service adoption and application consumption. This consumption, coupled with technologies available to collect valuable business insights, is producing huge quantities of data that is growing exponentially and must be delivered quickly, securely and efficiently.

I believe success in the next decade lies in high capacity and low latency SDN solutions, which can seamlessly allocate network resources based on individual requirements. With this level of intelligence, network providers can demonstrate cloud like characteristics such as self-service, on-demand and scalability through a unified delivery infrastructure.

What is the greatest challenge for an IT company or department today?

Until recently, the main challenges facing IT departments were selecting the right hardware and software, deploying them quickly at minimal cost and keeping them working. However, a new challenge is edging its way up IT executives’ list of concerns. Many employees are deciding for themselves what IT they need and are proceeding to use it in the workplace without corporate approval.

The risks related to this growing trend – termed Shadow IT – are huge. Because the IT department has not extended its security policies and technical solutions to the unauthorised technology, the company’s IT environment and data may become considerably more vulnerable.

How should IT departments deal with the emergence of shadow IT? The answer is to start listening to individuals and teams throughout the business to help ensure employees have access to the latest collaboration tools they want, empowering them to do their jobs more effectively.

Who is your tech hero (and why)?

It’s a bit cliché but my tech hero would have to be Steve Jobs. There’s a great quote in Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg’s book, “How Google Works”, where they describe Jobs as the quintessential “smart creative” – an expression for someone with a combination of technical depth and creative talent.

His vision extended far beyond just creating technology to make money, which is evidenced today in the profound impact Apple technology has had on the world, helping transform everything from the way children learn to how we can monitor and improve our health.

Antony Bourne, Global Industry Director, IFS

Antony BourneAs the Global Industry Director at IFS, Antony’s responsibilities include acting as the Global Industry Director for Industrial Manufacturing and High Tech as well as managing the other global industry directors. Antony has over 15 years experience in the IT industry, including working in the manufacturing sector. Prior to joining IFS in 1997, he held Business Analyst positions with Ford Motor Company and AlliedSignal. During this time he implemented ERP applications as well as business process improvements.

1. What did the audience learn from attending the webinar?

They learnt that cost is not always the most important factor when choosing a new ERP package, functionality and usability are instead.

Another key factor is that flexibility of the solution ensures ROI.

2. What did you most enjoy about presenting to a live audience?

I always enjoy getting questions and feedback from the audience since it shows that they have understood the issues and want to learn more.

3. How did you get into the industry and what do you most enjoy about your role?

Started as a business analyst at an automotive supplier, installed a new ERP package when our plant was sold to another company, then was going to go to Ireland to be trained in a German ERP package, but had a call from IFS and have been there ever since (since 1997).

 4. What’s the best thing someone has ever taught you?

To always try my best, be honest, and don’t say that I know everything because I don’t and I never will. I am always learning new things from different companies on how they operate their business as well as embracing new technologies as they emerge in the market.

5. How are you hoping to help IFS to grow in the near future and what are your plans for 2015 and 2016?

By showing IFS Applications 9 to both existing customers and prospective customers, and by working with marketing and the analyst community to ensure that they are aware of what we can do and what makes us different to other ERP providers.

6. What motivates you?

I really enjoy meeting customers that I helped with during the sales process successfully going live and meeting up year after year. Listening them tell me that they are still happy with the solution and the support that they get from us makes me feel so happy.

Anthony presented along with his colleague Nick Castellina the IFS webinar ‘Select Flexible Enterprise Software and Be Prepared for Business Challenges’.

The session is now available to watch here.

Is Your Business Solution Adequate to Support Your Growth: Find Out in my Upcoming Webinar

Finding a needle in a haystack is hard, but the task pales in comparison to finding a specific needle in a pile of needles. Selecting the ideal Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution from among the numerous options on the market can feel like just as daunting a challenge. ERP represents a serious investment for any organization and is vital to future success. As such, a great deal is at stake. The ERP selection process should be regarded as a top priority, with appropriate time and resources devoted to it. Top performing organizations approach the selection process with a clear plan in mind and come away with solutions that implement smoothly and help drive business immediately. Further, those that get the most value out of ERP choose a solution that can support them through business change and as they continue to grow. On the other hand, less meticulous organizations become saddled with solutions that continually disappoint, put additional strain on the organization, and often need to be replaced.

In many of my past research surveys, I asked survey takers to indicate the selection criteria they choose when selecting ERP. Functionality and ease of use always come out on top. But while these two selection criteria are integral to selecting a solution that fits your organization today, neither of these criteria are necessarily permanent. Functionality may no longer be adequate as your organization’s needs change, and a system that seems easy to use today may feel clunky in comparison to newer, upgraded solutions over time. In fact, a recent study of mine asked survey takers to indicate the reasons that they replaced their old ERP system (Figure 1). Three of the top four reasons concern solutions that are no longer able to support the business. Maybe it does not have the features needed to continue to operate effectively; maybe it is unable to support connections with emerging technologies; or maybe it can no longer handle the business due to explosive growth. Regardless of the reason, what is the point of paying maintenance on an ERP solution that can no longer support the business?

Figure I: Is it Time to Replace Our System?
IFS

But replacing an ERP can be expensive and disruptive to the business as well as carry a lot of risk. Organizations could be better off staying on the latest version of their solution (the Best-in-Class are 61% more likely to be on the latest release), as well as doing necessary tailoring themselves. For this reason, Best-in-Class organizations are 83% more likely to have a solution that can be quickly tailored to reflect business change. Therefore, flexibility needs to be a top criteria used when selecting an ERP.

This flexibility expands an organizations ability to grow, support new business models, remain compliant, and take advantage of emerging technology. My research has uncovered numerous benefits from selecting an adaptable solution. I have also uncovered many tips on how to take advantage of this flexibility to become a more effective organization. I would like to invite you to attend a webinar that I am presenting on June 9 at 10am EST in partnership with IFS to hear some of these tips. You can register for the webinar by clicking here. I hope you can make it.

David Murphy, Worldwide Director of Marketing, HP

David’s worldwide marketing team at HP helps deliver the highest value portfolio of inkjet web press technology in the market. HP Inkjet Web Press technology drives digital transformation in mainstream printing with high-volume applications ranging from publishing to production mail to general marketing collateral.

At HP, David drives the production inkjet division’s worldwide marketing strategy, future product marketing, current business management, and long term business planning. He works intimately with HP’s customers to help transform their business models, accelerate their growth, and maximize value to their clients.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with us?

It is important that marketing professionals understand the latest technology available to enable higher ROI and more effective communications. Inkjet is a rapidly evolving technology that is changing the face of printed communications. Business Review Webinars is an ideal medium to reach key decision makers and those interested in furthering their education.

2. How did you get into the industry?

I first became involved in graphic arts communications in my undergrad university days. I quickly developed a passion for helping people communicate to their audiences more effectively and efficiently. Over time, the technologies have evolved and today the communications landscape is transforming faster than ever. With markets and media choices changing so fast, I think today is the most exciting time to be a marketing professional.

3. What has been the best moment in your career?

I am currently experiencing the best time of my career. I am actively and continuously engaging with thought leaders in both technology and in communications. With that engagement, I am learning more than ever while at the same time I am able to share new innovations in print technology with the market. The future of digital print is brighter than ever.

4. Where is your favourite place in the world and why?

My most favorite place in the world is when I am sitting next to customers and marketing professionals talking about new ideas and case study successes. On March 25, that place will be this webinar.

5. What’s the most useful thing someone has ever taught you?

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” I think of this quote frequently when I work with people who believe in what they are doing and know that they are making a difference. Our customers do this and HP technologists do this every day when we create new ways of communicating. Inkjet innovation is an example of how HP is leading the way enthusiastically toward the future.

David will be presenting HP’s webinar ‘Brand Webinar: HP High Speed Inkjet – A new opportunity for Printed Communications?‘ on the 25th March at 11am New York/3pm London. You can read more and register here.

Grant Blewett, Packaging Segment Manager, Kodak

Grant BlewettGrant Blewett is the Packaging Segment Manager for Kodak, a world leader in technology solutions for the printing industry. Grant holds a print management degree and has over 21 years of professional experience in the graphic arts industry. With a strong background in print production, business development and prepress technology, he has led successful sales and marketing teams for Kodak, and formerly Scitex, across diverse geographic regions.

Since 2008 Grant has been based in Belgium with specific responsibility for the packaging market segment for Kodak in the EAMER region. He has a passion for flexo and been instrumental in introducing the market leading KODAK FLEXCEL NX Plate making solution to the European, Middle East and African markets. Grant is a frequent guest speaker at industry events across Europe and brings with him an in-depth understanding of the needs and pressures of Brand Owners.

1. Why did you decide to do a webinar with us?

Kodak clearly understands the importance of the ‘Brand Owner’ in the packaging value chain of which print has a major part to play. Kodak today has several solutions that provide significant cost, productivity and shelf impact benefits to the Brand Owner and we would like to make use of this forum to inform the Brand Owners of our value proposition.

2. Who or what inspired you to get into the industry?

I have been in the larger print industry most of my professional career, so for me the question is why the flexo packaging industry? To which my answer would be that flexo print is the most dynamic, fast changing and challenging part of the entire industry which continually stimulates and challenges me.

3. What’s your favourite thing about presenting to a live audience?

Honestly, presenting technically interesting topics to large and small audiences is something I truly enjoy doing. I love the interaction and energy that flows back from an audience when they appreciate the topic, this energy in turn inspires me.

4. What has been your best holiday and where would you recommend visiting?

Ah well, it’s not for everybody but one of the best ever would be attending the world skydive ‘boogie’ (which is the term for a skydive holiday). This was in the most beautiful valley north of Cape Town South Africa, which by the way is also beautiful from the ground too. You should try and see this part of the world.

5. What one item would you take with you to a desert island and why?

Well this would simply have to be a package deal, which would consist of a parachute, aeroplane and runway. Can you imagine skydiving onto your very own island surrounded by the sea?

Grant will be presenting Kodak’s webinar ‘Using flexo to meet your most demanding flexible packaging challenges‘ alongside David Luttenberger CPP, Global Packaging Director, Mintel Group Ltd on the 18th November at 10am New York/3pm London. To read more and register click here.
