Supply Talk: Aneta Manningtonova’s Blog – August Edition

Welcome to the August summer edition of our Online Newsletter: Supply Talk. This issue is packed full of the latest information including our upcoming and on demand webinars and the latest news within the industry.

In this month’s spotlight interview we would like to introduce Puneet Saxena from JDA and Jay Sperry from Packaging Technology Integrated Solutions (PTIS), a division of HAVI Global Solutions (HGS). Puneet will be discussing his upcoming webinar and Jay will be looking at his most recently presented webinar.

For us in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is upon us and along with the warm weather; many are looking forward to or have just returned from a refreshing summer holiday. It’s also that time of year where much has been happening around the world in terms of sport and summer activities, below I would like to mention a few.

In June, London hosted The Wimbledon Championship, which is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and wildly considered the most prestigious. Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators, and Royal patronage. The tournament is also notable for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts. In 2009, Wimbledon’s Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain.

As a Czech citizen I would like to proudly announce that our Czech player Petra Kvitova, for the second time has won the woman’s Wimbledon title. We Czech, hope she can follow in Martina Navratilova’s footsteps and win many more. Also big congratulations to the supporters of Novak Djokovic who was the winner of the men’s title.

Another huge sporting event that has recently just finished was The FIFA World Cup – a tournament that has brought together communities and lovers of football from all around the globe. Big congratulations are in order for our German readers on your country winning the tournament; a fantastic effort! Also a special mention goes out to our Senior Marketing Executive Kiki Newell who was very happy to win our company’s World Cup Sweep Stake! Take a look at that smile!

Another great sporting event is The Tour de France. This year the tour visited the UK, starting in Yorkshire and coming right down through to London. Being based in the centre of London, we had the privilege of the tour passing right by our office! There were thousands of people supporting the riders as they flew past and we certainly enjoyed the spectacle! A special thanks to our colleague Diogo Moreira for the picture below.

Tour

Unfortunately it wasn’t Britain’s year for the tour. Defending champion and tournament favourite Chris Froome crashed out in the fifth stage of the tour due to wet conditions. Another British  favourite, Mark Cavendish, also crashed out after a sprint finish in the opening stage, subsequently having surgery on a dislocated shoulder. We want to wish both athletes a speedy recovery and the best of luck to those still battling it out for first place.

If you happen to be spending time in London this summer, I would love to offer my thoughts on one way you can enjoy it. The PROMS, more formally known as The BBC PROMS, or The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC, is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and other events held annually. The BBC PROMS 2014 promises to be just as huge and varied as it always is. They’ve got orchestras from China, Turkey and various other countries. Although this is a classical music festival – there’s other attractions there too, including some great musicians appearing like Paloma Faith and the Pet Shop Boys. The BBC will host a summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts in London at the Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall and additional Proms in the Park events. Our Operations Manager Kerry Bignell would also like to provide her thoughts on one of the ways that she enjoys her British summer time. “One of my favourite summer activities is The Notting Hill Carnival! This event has a great atmosphere and draws massive crowds over the August Bank Holiday weekend. I went back in 2013 and was so excited to join in the celebration. I picked a spot on one of the streets where the floats were going past and watched the performers dance through the streets in their costumes as the music changed from steel bands to reggae to hip hop and more. The streets can get very busy but do wander around as there is a lot more to see and try – especially the traditional Caribbean food. The Sunday is Children’s Day and the Monday is Adult’s Day so this event caters for everyone.” Interested? View it here: http://www.thenottinghillcarnival.com/

Spotlight Interview: Cynthia Wooge, Ph.D., Global Strategic Marketing & Michael Bienkowski, Ph.D., Manager Process and Analytical Development, SAFC

2014 Sales Meeting at Downtown St. Louis HyattWelcome ReceptionDr. Cynthia Wooge has been in pharmaceuticals for over 20 years and is now responsible for the ADC and bioconjugation markets, as Manager Global Strategic Marketing for SAFC. Previous roles include 15 years managing Process Development with a focus on antibody drug conjugates, therapeutic proteins, and bio-organic polymers, as well as in project management and business development.

Michael Bienkowski1Dr. Michael Bienkowski has 28 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry related to discovery and development of both small molecule and biologic drugs in multiple therapeutic areas. In his current role as Manager Process and Analytical Development, he leads the SAFC Bio-Conjugation Center of Emphasis which includes the development and production of Antibody Drug Conjugates to enable clinical evaluation.

Are You Developing the Next Cure for Cancer?

If you are working on an ADC – an antibody drug conjugate – it’s a good chance you are.  How exciting is that to be able to say ‘YES, I am working on a cure for cancer’!  Ever since I was a young girl, I wanted to be involved in pharmaceutical development because I wanted a way to have my love of science help others have a healthier, disease-free life.  ADCs offer the promise of that ‘magic bullet’ – a way to treat cancer without the fear about cures that are worse that the disease.

Wooge balloonsOther than the joy of science, what gets me up in the morning?
My family is very involved in hot air ballooning, so we see a lot of beautiful sunrises when the weather cooperates!  My husband, younger daughter and I are all pilots and have had the fortune to fly our balloons all over the US.  Also, I am very active in mission work through my church helping communities recover and rebuild from natural disasters.  I relax by spending time with my family, cooking, and playing handbells in choir when my work and travel schedule allows.  Mike also enjoys spending time with his family and traveling, and relaxes during his down time by playing ice hockey and guitar.

Both Mike and I have been involved in the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years and have seen many advances in technologies, analytical tools, and regulatory strategies. Working for a leading CMO enables us to use our skills and expertise in a wider variety of therapeutic areas, and transfer those skills across disciplines. At our site in SAFC, we have biologists, biochemists, organic chemists, and analytical scientists all working within the same Process and Analytical Development group. It enabled us to readily take our existing knowledge of bioconjugates and apply it to the newly emerging field of ADCs when we first entered this arena in 2007.  Since then we’ve made over 130 batches of ADCs, with half of those being used in clinical trials and the others for use in development. Building a solid knowledge of the process chemistry and controls and along with characterization of the product, we can make your ADC very reproducibly upon scale up.

To get a preview of what you’ll hear in the webinar, check out the links to these papers and podcast:

Mike and I are hoping that this webinar onSuccessful Strategies in the Development and Technology Transfer of Antibody Drug Conjugateswill help jump start your discovery programs or provide guidance as you progress through development of your clinical trial material.  You will need to register for the seminar to gain access.  Looking forward to having you join us on September 4 and hearing your comments and questions!

Aneta Manningtonova’s Blog – July Edition

Welcome to our July summer edition of our Online Newsletter: Energy Talk. This issue is packed full of the latest information including our upcoming and on demand webinars and the latest news within the industry.

In this month’s spotlight interview we would like to introduce Praveen Nagpal from ShellPraveen will be discussing his thoughts on his upcoming webinar.

man dreams holidaysIt’s that perfect time of year to get away. Whether you’re from the Southern Hemisphere wanting to escape those cold winter blues or whether you’re based in the Northern Hemisphere where summer is in full swing – nothing beats some time to get away from work, relax and enjoy the things you love doing. Below our Operations Manager Kerry Bignell has given her thoughts on one of the ways that she enjoys her British summer time.

One of the things l look forward to in summer are the pop-up big screen showings that happen around London. Last year, after a busy day at work, some friends and I headed to Trafalgar Square with some snacks and drinks in hand. It was a hot day and fortunately the organisers were handing out free hats and blow up pillows to sit on. We picked a spot on the ground and got comfy, surrounded by groups of families, friends, tourists and of course the late comers trying to find a free spot. La Tosca was showing that day and I really enjoyed it! There’s a variety of opera and ballet performances that are beamed live from the Royal Opera House and you can go for free. It’s definitely worth going on a warm summer evening. Interested? Check it out here.

If you have a favourite holiday destination we would love to hear about it! It may even feature in next month’s newsletter.

Thank you to everyone who commented on our blog and participated in our quiz question last month. For those of you who missed it our question was:

What percentage of the world’s population today relies on wood and other biomass for cooking and heating?

The answer is 40 percent. About 3 billion people, or more than 40 percent of the world’s people, rely on wood and other biomass—charcoal, agricultural waste, and dung—for fuel. The United Nations estimates emissions from inefficient wood cookstoves cause 1.6 million premature deaths each year.

If you fancy your chances at winning a voucher, simply answer this month’s quiz question – Good luck!
