In this month’s spotlight interviews we would like to introduce Steve Burton from ProMetic BioSciences, Paul Denny-Gouldson from IDBS and Sri Chilukuri from Intralinks. They will be discussing their thoughts on their upcoming webinar.
Like in our previous newsletters, we enjoy exploring the different traditions from all across the world. This month, we’ve seen (and will continue to see) a whole range of celebrations. At the beginning of May, we saw a public holiday known as “May Day”. This public holiday coincides with “International Workers’ Day” in what is a traditional spring holiday for many cultures; where dancing, singing and consumption of vast amounts of cake are part of the celebrations.
Specifically in English history, to celebrate this day there is a traditional dance known as Maypole Dancing. This involved trees being cut down and erected as a pole in the villages. Locals would dance around the pole to mark the beginning of summer and commencement of planting of the crops. It is suggested that the tallest maypole stood more than 143 feet (44 meters) high in 1661, London.
This year, May Day celebrations fell on a Thursday which meant that many mainland European countries were treated with a long weekend; no doubt spent enjoying quality time with friends and family. Interestingly, even though May Day is celebrated on the first of May, prior to 1752 it was actually celebrated 11 days earlier.
If your country, your town or even your family has a unique tradition please email me, as I would love to hear about it. Maybe it will feature in our next newsletter!
Thank you to everyone who commented on our blog and participated in our quiz question last month. For those of you who missed it our question was:
The earliest recordings of pharmaceutical documentation was around 1500 BC and included 800 prescriptions mentioning 700 medications. From what country did this come from?
The answer is that it came from Egypt.
If you fancy your chances at winning a voucher, simply answer this month’s quiz question – Good luck!
