EU Data Protection Regulation: is your cyber security strategy fit for purpose?

It’s finally on its way. Expected to be signed within months, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation will lay down the law for 28 member states across Europe – and any country choosing to do business in the region. These are not directives designed to influence national policy. This is one law across one continent. Even if Britain chooses to leave the EU, this law will prove inescapable.

The regulation will dramatically increase penalties for data breaches should companies fail to protect customer and employee personal identifiable information – with maximum fines of up to 4 per cent of global annual turnover. In addition, the regulation will materially impact what data an organisation can hold and in what form. Will your organisation be ready? From encryption to intrusion, from zero day threats to hybrid cloud adoption, do you have the cyber security strategy in place to cope?

Simon has worked in the IT industry since the late 80’s and in security specifically of the last 20 years. He has worked in a number of roles for influential security vendors such as Internet Security Systems, Netscreen, Nitro Security and Damballa. He has also spent over 8 years working as a contractor for the UK Government, including HMRC, MOD and the Cabinet Office; where he worked as a Security Architect at some of the largest security transformation projects carried out in the UK. His skills range from Intrusion Detection, Security Event Management and Malware detection and research.

Robert Carolina, BA, JD, LL.M, Executive Director, Institute for Cyber Security Innovation, Senior Visiting Fellow, Information Security Group, Royal Holloway University of London

Robert Carolina is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court England & Wales, and admitted to practice before the US Supreme Court and in the State of Illinois. In additional to an undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton, he holds degrees from Georgetown University (Juris Doctor) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LL.M in International Business Law). Following a period in-house with an Internet software development company, he moved to London in 1992 and subsequently worked for two of the world’s largest law firms. Robert has represented numerous customer and supplier companies in technology procurement and outsourcing contract negotiations. He also advises on legal aspects of complex e-commerce systems. Recognised as a leading UK expert on IT law and e-commerce law, he regularly presents courses and workshops on legal aspects of technology procurement and e-commerce.
