Evolving into an IT-friendly Enterprise Operations Platform to Enhance Pipeline Safety, Asset Management and Facilities Maintenance
Pipeline operators are increasingly struggling to keep pace with changes in regulatory and IT policies and to maintain and upgrade their pipeline SCADA systems in a cost effective way. Failure in this endeavor risks exposing their systems to newly emerging (cyber) security and safety risks, and often also leads to unexpected problems when upgrading or installing security patches for tailored applications.
Pipeline SCADA systems are at the heart of the pipeline operations management environment. Essentially they consist of a core SCADA platform supplemented with specific gas and liquid applications that enable a pipeline operator to manage the delivery contracts and associated logistics in the most time and energy efficient manner. As such, a pipeline SCADA system is an essential element that can significantly increase profitability, provided it is well implemented.
However, many pipeline SCADA systems that are in use today have been tailored to suit a specific set of circumstances. They lack both a standard system foundation for supporting pluggable application modules and a core design that ensures interoperability with enterprise IT environments and policies. The maintenance and upgrade of tailor-made applications, and their often complex system architectures to protect them from breaches and security compromises, poses increasing challenges for pipeline operators. Unless a solid plan is put in place to migrate to a standard system foundation and application architecture, the “cost of ownership†may eventually become uncontrollable and, in the worst case scenario, an upgrade may end up as costly as a tear-out and replacement of the entire system.
Join this webcast to explore some real-world experiences and the challenges faced in improving a system to achieve a more sustainable solution. Learn how your organization could benefit by using standardized applications to drive change within your organization.
