The staggering impact of using innovative heat transfer solutions
Using innovative heat transfer solutions in energy efficiency is something to be explored. Due to more stringent rules and regulations disallowing the use of seawater, water from rivers and below ground for cooling, this type of cooling is becoming the standard solution for power cooling worldwide. We will therefore focus the webinar on air-cooled coolers and highlight three case studies that demonstrate the effect they can have.
Case study I: Air-cooled condenser, Germany – Plot space, noise and energy consumption.
Like many (power) plants using air-cooled coolers, this power plant faced noise issues. More strict regulations forced this power plant to slow down its capacity, decreasing the noise emission. With standard fans the noise levels could not be decreased. We will describe how it was possible to increase the cooling capacity, staying well beneath the approved noise levels and as a bonus decrease the energy consumption by 60%.
Case study II: Air-cooled condenser, England – Sensitivity for wind velocity.
Air-driven cooling (A-frame) condensers are used in power generation using vacuum steam turbines in order to create better steam condensation. This case study will explore how an A-frame designed around the whizz-wheel fan systems are much less vulnerable for high wind speeds.
As a bonus, a future perspective will be provided on other innovative technologies ready to be introduced in the market and their respective impact on (economic) efficiencies for the power industry.
